Worried about an STD? Just pee on your phone

According to the Guardian, Mobile Phones and computers will soon be able to diagnose sexually transmitted diseases. Doctors have partnered with engineers to develop a small device that will tell someone quickly and privately if they have caught an infection through sexual contact.

It works by urinating or spitting onto a small computer chip that fits directly into your phone or computer. Slide the card into your mobile device, and it will tell you whether you're infected with any STD's and if so, which ones.

About 66% of all sexually transmitted disease occur in people 25 years of age or younger (Safelab). This product has been created with this younger crown in mind. Many people that acquire that "itch they can't scratch", are too embarrassed to go to the doctors. With this product there won't even be a need to go unless your test comes back positive. Sold everywhere condoms are currently sold, one can purchase this device and test themselves at their own convenience in privacy.

With patients gaining greater control of their sexual health, as well as the ability to alert recent sexual partners, self-testing technology could lead to quicker diagnosis, and help limit the spread of STD's. The convenience factor and the privacy factor of this technology is something many people will appreciate. This is the first "mobile phone diagnosis" of its kind, but if this technology ends up working I could see our future world adopting this technique in diagnosing more than just STD's. Mobile Phones are becoming Mobile Doctors.

  2. I have to agree with Tom this might be one of the oddest post but, I feel like it could really benifit people. People who are embarased to go get checked for stds can now just pee on their phones and the results will come up. A very interesting concept I just wonder if they will ever be put into production.

  3. This is another step in our phones becoming a increasingly more important part in our daily lives. I'm not saying it's either good or bad but it is definitely interesting how smart phones are becoming smarter.

  4. I think the benefits are best stated by Ben Popper, "If it's really that simple, why wait till after the 'deed' is done? Wouldn't it make more sense for prospective partners to swap fluids before hand, get a reading on their cell phones, and then decide whether or not to 'finish the download'?"

  5. I think like some of the other people said before it's really a strange thing but it could also be helpful with the people who are less likely to get and get checked out because of their feelings of embarrassment or what not. I also agree that it's leading us to rely on technology and our phones far too much. It semi reminds me of that commercial where everyone is on their phones and ignoring the world around them.

  6. I don't know if it's just me but, peeing or spitting on a chip and then sliding the card into my phone doesn't sound so good personally. But, the idea of having your phone that can scan the traces of STDs is awesome.

  7. I'm not sure I would be ok with putting my phone anywhere near waste. handling a chip that someone has peed on just sounds so disgusting, let alone if they have a STD.
